Perfume and Cologne - A Scentsation

Perfume and Cologne have been around since Ancient Times. The ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Persians, and Romans all used various types of perfumes. The Egyptians used perfume for religious rituals and also as a beauty product. It used to be a sign of wealth to have beauty products such as perfume and cologne and therefore not so many people had access to it, but fortunately today perfume and cologne are so common that you can walk into any drug store or department store and pick out from hundreds, if not thousands of kinds. Prices on such products can range anywhere from very cheap, maybe twenty dollars a bottle, to extremely expensive, perhaps two hundred dollars a bottle.

The sweet scents are almost like a form of art. Perfume and cologne come in bottles of different colors and shapes and sizes. Some of the shapes are rectangular, spherical, some oblong, tube-like, some are short, fat, tall, thin, stars, and even in the shape of the human body. I don't think there exists a celebrity that doesn't have their own perfume or cologne. There is Sarah Jessica Parker, Elizabeth Taylor, Britney Spears, Celine Dion, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson, and Usher, just to name a few.

Have you ever walked into a department store and suddenly became overwhelmed by all of the various perfume smells? Have you ever wondered how perfume could have so many different kinds of smells? Or why some fragrances are so drastically more expensive than others? Are you buying the name or the quality of the product? They are all basically made of the same base ingredients, but perhaps it's the brand name or physical bottle you are buying.

It can be overwhelming choosing a particular scent that you like. Sometimes there are coffee beans in the perfume aisle to help you differentiate between scents, since smelling fragrance after fragrance could get confusing and dull your sense of smell. Some fragrances are more flowery, while others smell of oak, pine, lemon, almond, vanilla, wood, or ocean. Picking out a certain fragrance can reflect the type of mood you are in. If you are in a happy, innocent mood, you may want to try something light and airy. If you are in a more serious mood you may want something a little more bold or striking. A business person may want something a little different from what a mother or waiter would wear, for example.

While these fragrances can be attractive and addictive, they can be potentially dangerous to the human body and environment. Many people who have asthma may be very sensitive and have an asthmatic reaction to many types of perfumes. Also, pregnant woman may develop an aversion to certain smells and fragrances during their pregnancy. Some smells they liked before they were pregnant may now make them somewhat nauseous.

Picking out your own favorite perfume or cologne could be a laborious task. While you should take into consideration the price and if it makes you feel good or not, choosing your personal fragrance can be an exciting endeavour, a real scentsation!
